Sweeney becomes a Blue
April 25 2008
Cardiff Blues have confirmed the signing of Welsh international fly-half Ceri Sweeney on a two-year deal.
Planet Rugby exclusively revealed Sweeney was in talks with the Blues in the same week that Michael Owen left Rodney Parade, and now the move has been confirmed.
Sweeney, who has won 35 caps for Wales, was high on Bristol's shopping list but has opted to remain in Wales as he looks to add to his caps tally.
His arrival, coupled with Dai Flanagan's contract extension, means the Blues will have three fly-halfs to pick from next season - Nicky Robinson the third.
Blues Chief Executive Bob Norster was delighted with the contract news.
"Ceri is a quality player who has been a consistent performer for the sides he has represented and carries significant experience following his involvement so far with the Wales national team," he said.
"Young Dai has also shown impressive levels of maturity and continues to make progress in the senior game.
"We are always looking to strengthen our squad whenever possible and are confident both these young Welsh players will improve our future play-making options."
The Blues have also confirmed that hooker Duane Goodfield has moved the other way, having signed a two-year deal with the Dragons.
Dragons Head Coach Paul Turner is excited about welcoming the talented young hooker to Rodney Parade.
"Duane is of very good pedigree and a lot of people within the Blues region speak highly of him," he said.
"He is a young and up and coming hooker with lots of potential and a big career ahead of him.
"He will add to our strength in depth that is needed within the squad and we are delighted that Duane has committed to the region."
