Monty seeking early release
May 20 2008
World Cup-winning full-back Percy Montgomery is in negotiations with his French club, Perpignan, over the possibility of an early release to join up with the Springboks training squad.
The veteran full-back's contract with the Top 14 side expires at the end of the current season which could run until the end of June.
He would need an early release to participate in the Springbok training camp and the three June Tests against Wales and Italy.
Montgomery, who has scored 93 points in the 13 matches he has played for Perpignan, has four league games and possible play-off matches still remaining with his newly adopted team and they would be understandably reluctant to lose their kicker going into the home stretch.
The 34-year-old Montgomery, capped 94 times for South Africa, and his agent held a meeting with the club on Monday and is expected to clarify the situation on Thursday.
