Pocock still a Force

Western Force flanker David Pocock has sealed a new two-year contract with the franchise and the ARU.

Currently in camp with the Australian U20 ahead of the IRB Junior World Championships in Wales next month, Pocock has committed to the WA side until the end of the 2010 season.

RugbyWA CEO Greg Harris said Pocock's signature was a major coup for the organisation.

"David is an exceptional rugby talent and a genuine player of the future," said Harris.

We've all seen his performances on the field over the past two seasons, but he's also a highly intelligent young man with an eye on his future post-rugby," said Harris.

The Zimbabwean-born flanker has made 25 Super 14 appearances for the Western Force since making his debut less than three weeks after his 18th birthday against the Sharks in Durban in 2006.

The 20 year old has made the blue number seven jersey his own, starting all but two matches at openside flanker this season.

Pocock said there were a number of factors in his decision to renew his contract with the Perth-based outfit.

"I've loved my time in Perth and really enjoy playing my rugby here," said Pocock.

"Re-signing with the Western Force was more than just a rugby decision. I had to consider some aspects outside of football but I'm very happy that I've been able to secure my future with the club," he said.

"I've been here since the beginning and we've already made good progress as a team and I'm sure that will continue over the next couple of seasons."

"We've got a really good bunch of blokes here, some world class players and a fantastic coaching staff and I really believe we are heading in the right direction."

Pocock, who represented Australia A in three IRB Pacific Nations Cup matches last season, has set his sights on higher honours.

"It was a fantastic experience playing for Australia A last year and I'm really looking forward to the U20 World Championships next month," he said.

"There are a lot of talented players in the openside flanker position vying for places in the Wallabies but it is obviously a goal of mine to play for Australia. I just have to keep playing well and keep improving my game and wait for my opportunity to come," he said.

While Pocock is in camp in with the Australian U20 squad, Wallabies selectors still have first call on any of the players named for the Junior World Championships.

The Wallabies squad will be named in Sydney on Monday, 2 June.

Harris said the club would assist Pocock to further his education both on and off the field.

"David will have an excellent opportunity to further his academic and business aspirations to complement his rugby education in the Emirates Western Force program," said Harris.

"David is a diligent player and he considered his options carefully. His contract negotiations were managed in a very professional manner," he said.

"We are delighted that he has decided to continue his career here in Perth where he has established himself as a champion individual and an important team member both on and off the field."
