Claassens extends Bath stay
August 25 2008
Bath have received a boost ahead of the new season with the news that scrum-half Michael Claassens has signed a new two-year contract extension at the club.
The South African number nine, who enjoyed a fine debut season in the Guinness Premiership that culminated in European Challenge Cup glory, started 29 first-team games last term.
And he was delighted to have penned a new deal at the Rec, insisting there is nowhere else he's rather be at the current time.
"I really enjoyed my first season here. It was great. Bath is a fantastic rugby city too," Claassens said, speaking to the club's website.
"There is no other club in England that I would consider. I am very happy with the coaches and the team and I think Bath are really capable of going somewhere great."
Head Coach Steve Meehan brought Claassens and fellow Springbok Butch James to the club last year with both stamping their authority and brand on the team.
And Meehan was unsurprisingly pleased to have secured the former's services as he sees bright days ahead with Claassens at the base.
"It is obviously terrific for the club that Michael has decided to stay, especially signing so early in the season," said Meehan.
"He is exactly the type of character and person that we want at Bath Rugby. Aside from his obvious playing abilities, he is the sort that I believe can really represent what Bath Rugby stands for."
