Japan: Confirm their bid to fly the flag in 2015 or 2019

Japan has formally applied to be the host of the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.

The Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) added they had sent a letter of intent to the International Rugby Board confirming the country's bid for both the 2015 and 2019 tournaments.

By submitting a letter of intent for both World Cups, Japan can keep the option open to bid for either, or both, in their final tender to the IRB next year.

"We are bidding to host the Rugby World Cup not just for Japan but for Asia," JRFU Chairman Nobby Mashimo was quoted by Reuters.

"Bringing the (tournament) to Japan and Asia will unlock the potential of rugby as a truly global sport."

Japan came close to being named as host for the 2011 World Cup but the vote went to New Zealand which was an unpopular decision at the time.

Reports then followed saying that New Zealand had traded All Black matches and the promise of Argentina's inclusion in the Tri-Nations. New Zealand officials then denied any trading for votes had taken place.

South Africa were an early favourite to win the vote but also lost out to New Zealand and they have stated their intent on bidding for the 2019 World Cup.

A joint bid between England and Wales possibly with Ireland and Scotland has been linked with the 2015 bid.
