Isaac Ross: the modern lock?

Isaac Ross: Set for a long AB career

The athletic Isaac Ross announced his arrival on the international stage with another sterling performance in Saturday's 27-6 defeat of Italy.

The 24-year-old lock entertained fans with his running and passing skills during the Super 14 tournament and again demonstrated how the rise of the modern player contributes to a more open, flowing game.

And Ross' ability did not go unnoticed by the All Black coaching staff.

"We were good when Isaac got out in the backs, he went forward for us," said assistant coach Wayne Smith speaking to NZPA.

The rise of yet another impressive All Black lock is good news for the Kiwis, especially when keeping in mind that a certain Ali Williams is currently out with injury. Williams will miss the upcoming Tri Nations and much is made of Ross' ironic rise to the starting line-up.

"I don't think you can expect Isaac to be an Ali Williams," Forward Coach Steve Hansen said.

"Ali Williams took some time to become the player that he is and Isaac's no different. He's going to take time to become a complete rugby player.

"There are some parts of his game that are world class internationally already and there are other parts of his game that we need to improve and we'll work on that but it'll take time."

Is Ross ready for the the Tri-Nations, a tournament that many believe to be the toughest rugby challenge on the planet?

"I'm still a rookie but having three tests under the belt against some good quality sides heading into the Tri-Nations, I'm feeling pretty confident," said Ross.

"Those debut nerves have gone, I'm feeling more comfortable in my role."

Meanwhile, Hansen believes that Ross will add another string to the All Black's attacking bow when they take on Australia in Auckland on July 19.

"He's not a naturally aggressive player, physicality's not his normal game," he said.

"He's very outstanding with ball in hand and aerially he's outstanding.

"That's normal for a young man. Most of his growing over the last few years has been up rather than out.

"He'll mature into a really good athlete probably over the next few years."

We're sure he will.
