Bastareaud in psychiatric unit

France centre Mathieu Bastareaud's problems deepened on Monday after club president Max Guazzini confirmed he had been hospitalised due to psychological issues.

The Stade Francais player admitted last week that he made up the story of being the victim of a Wellington assualt before reports later emerged that the 20-year-old may have been punched by a French team-mate.

But in the latest twist to the saga, Guazzini has revealed that instead of the youngster heading to the West Indies for an end-of-season holiday, he had instead been admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

"Journalists have even gone to his house and that of his parents," said Guazzini, speaking to AFP.

"He is completely devastated, he has to be left alone."
