Canterbury have included the returning Daniel Carter alongside several new faces in their 2009 Air New Zealand Cup squad as they look to defend their tournament crown.

The newcomers named by boss Rob Penney include wings Tu Umaga-Marshall and Chris Small, number eight Ash Parker, half-back Willie Heinz, hooker Will Catherwood, flank Matt Todd, lock Luke Romano, props Andrew Olorenshaw and Rodney Ah You and full-back Sam Monaghan.

"We are really pleased with the quality of players we have in the squad. There is a good mix of young guys and more experienced players. We are sure that they will turn their talent into good performances on the training and playing fields," Penney said, who led to his side to the trophy last season.

"Tabai and I are looking forward to working with them more closely as we start the defence of our Air New Zealand Cup title in earnest."

Canterbury have scheduled two pre-season fixtures against Southland in Invercargill on July 17 and against Wellington at the Westpac Stadium the following Friday.
