Reds sign trio to sway Barnes

Berrick Barnes: Staying or going?

The Reds have stepped up their efforts to keep hold of Berrick Barnes by unveiling three former Wallabies in managerial and coaching roles.

Entering the franchise ahead of 2010 are former centre Daniel Herbert, who has been appointed General Manager in a role that will see him handle player negotiations, while Tim Horan and Dan Crowley come in as player mentors.

The trio are poised to link up with Head Coach Phil Mooney in moves that could sway the decision of their chief playmaker.

Barnes is expected to make a decision on his playing future before Australia's Tri-Nations opener against New Zealand next weekend.

"They have collectively played 185 Tests for Australia and all are World Cup winners," said a pleased Queensland Rugby chairman Peter Lewis.

"They will each bring different skills and perspectives to the table and extensive experience in the professional game.

"Their influence will go a long way in recruiting and retaining the best players."

The Reds finished the 2009 season in a disappointing thirteenth position, which ultimately furthered rumours that key man Barnes could leave Brisbane.

But the back, who arrived in Sydney on Tuesday in preparation for the opening Auckland fixture, admitted he was encouraged by the signings.

"There's been a few decisions made in Queensland today which is a positive sign," Barnes said, speaking to AAP.

"These announcements keep being made, it gives me a clearer picture of where the organisation is going and obviously they are making the right noises at the moment, which is a good thing.

"I've endured four tough years there and a lot of promises and a lot of hot air.

"I just want to be sure that the organisation from the top down to the players is moving in the right direction and that's success on the field."
