Phil Godman: We need fast start

Phil Godman has warned Edinburgh they must hit the ground running when they launch their Magners League assault this September.

The Scottish side face a September 4 opener away to Cardiff Blues followed by a home clash with Connacht a week later.

Last term, Edinburgh lost to both Munster and Leinster during the opening two rounds of the competition and were forced to play catch-up during the second half of the season.

But despite winning their final six fixtures, they could not prevent Munster from winning the championship.

"If you ask anyone in the squad what cost us the title last season then they will tell it was down to our slow start," said Godman.

"We all know that we must generate some early momentum and carry on where we left off last season; winning matches.

"It is imperative that if we want to also do well in the Heineken Cup that we go into the competition off the back of achieving some good Magners League results."
