Griquas laid low
August 12 2009
The table-topping Griquas have been hit by a spate of injuries and illness as they prepare to host the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup on Saturday.
Unbeaten so far this season the Griquas face their toughest test to date this week but their task has been made even harder after coach Dawie Theron was forced to cancel Tuesday's training to give his players a chance to recuperate.
Theron has delayed the announcement of his starting XV as nine of his players, all of whom were involved in last weeks win over Western Province, are struggling with light injuries or 'flu.
On sick list are prop Albertus Buckle, hookers Rayno Barnes, Andries Kruger, centre Barry Geel (centre), lock Jacques Lombaard, wing Bjorn Basson and fly-half Naas Olivier, who all have flu or colds.
Prop Ruaan du Preez and scrum-half Sarel Pretorius have light injuries.
Theron said that while he expected most of them to play this weekend, the curtailment in his preparations were most unwelcome.
"Sarel has a light thigh muscle injury, but should be able to play, while Ruaan's knee is giving him trouble. Furthermore, seven other players have 'flu or colds, which makes it difficult to prepare," Theron told Supersport.
"We should be able to get a full practice in on Wednesday and announce a team afterwards."
"We want to give the players as much opportunity as possible to recover."
