Christophers cited for possible gouge

Phil Christophers: There may be trouble ahead

Castres centre Phil Christophers has been cited following an alleged gouging incident in last weekend's Heineken Cup clash with London Wasps, in a case with a couple of peculiarities.

The citing against former England international Christophers is officially for, "alleged contact with the eye/eye area" of Wasps' number eight Joe Worsley.

However, the citing was lodged outside the 50-hour citing window by the Citing Commissioner, Eddie Walsh (Ireland). The game was not televised live and he was unable to complete his review within the citing window.

The request will therefore be reviewed by Professor Lorne Crerar, Chairman of the independent Disciplinary Panel, who will determine whether the citing should go forward to an independent Disciplinary Committee.

Christophers has been named in Castres' side to face Edinburgh on Saturday, and the citing was quite clear in that Christophers was free to play until Mr. Crerar had made his decision.
