Bill McLaren: To be paid a minute's applause as tribute

Scottish Rugby have confirmed that a minute's applause will be held ahead of Edinburgh's Heineken Cup match with Stade Francais on Saturday in memory of Bill McLaren.

The former commentator, known as the"voice of rugby" , passed away yesterday aged 86.

McLaren, who was on the verge of a full international cap when he contracted tuberculosis in 1947, .was revered by a generation of the game's fans due to his knowledge and enthusiasm.

An SRU statement read: "There will be a minute's applause for Bill at Murrayfield this Saturday prior to kick-off in the Edinburgh v Stade Francais Heineken Cup fixture and Scottish Rugby have been informed that many clubs throughout the country plan to stage a similar tribute prior to their games this weekend, including at Mansfield Park before Hawick play Biggar in a Scottish Hydro Premier Division 2 match."

Tributes have poured in for the Hawick native since the news of his death.

Scotland head coach Andy Robinson said during the announcement of his RBS 6 Nations squad: ""Bill McLaren was a world-class person and number one commentator in the world. He touched so many people's lives.

"To me, as a youngster, I was inspired by his commentary, the enthusiasm he showed for the game and how he made it entertaining. He was a tremendous person and a fantastic ambassador for the sport. My thoughts go out to his wife, Bette, and his family."

McLaren's funeral will take place on Monday in his home town and there are plans to hold a memorial service in the coming weeks, while Scottish Rugby also confirmed they will discuss plans for a lasting memorial to the broadcaster.
