Jenkins at Bath - just for kicks
September 22 2008
Bath have snapped up Welsh record Test points scorer Neil Jenkins as a kicking coach, in the wake of their home Guinness Premiership defeat to Gloucester last weekend.
Jenkins is spending one day a week at the Rec aiding Bath's kickers, a week after Butch James missed no less than five penalties in Bath's 17-21 home reverse to their closest rivals.
21-year-old winger Jack Cuthbert took the kicking duties frm James - who missed another three - as Bath bounced back with a 20-16 win over London Irish on Saturday, landing three out of three.
"The sessions have been really helpful," said Cuthbert to the Western Daily Press
"I am a fond believer of you can have style you want and if you practice hard enough you will be successful."
Cuthbert now hopes his 'other string to his bow' will keep him in Meehan's side, as Bath seek to keep thmselves in Heineken Cup contention this season.
"Hopefully I can also fill in at full-back. I see myself there rather than playing on the wing," he continued.
"I want to get as many starts as I can. I want to work on my kicking, make it another string on my bow and become a first-choice kicker.
"I have been practising a lot. The management are aware of that.
"This is a different league entirely although there were a lot of people there - but I have never really struggled with that aspect.
"I managed to shut my mind down, and concentrate on what I was going to do."
