Wasps duo's fate must wait

September 23 2008

James Haskell: The gavel is poised

England flanker James Haskell and Wasps team-mate Richard Birkett will have to wait until Tuesday to learn their fate following a Rugby Football Union (RFU) disciplinary hearing on Monday.

Haskell and Birkett were charged with striking with the head (effectively headbutting) and stamping respectively during Premiership champions Wasps 11-10 defeat against Worcester on September 14.

The minimum recommended entry-level punishment for a head-butt is six weeks with the maximum possible sanction a two-year ban.

However, an RFU statement said a three-man panel chaired by the union's disciplinary officer, His Honour Judge Jeff Blackett, assisted by former England prop Jeff Probyn and Peter Budge were "discussing the cases further and judgement has been reserved until Tuesday morning, when the decisions will be announced".

Wasps have endured a poor start to the season, losing all three of their opening Premiership matches.
