Ali Williams' 2010 over

January 29 2010

Ali Williams: Dreadful blow

All Blacks lock Ali Williams will miss the remainder of 2010 with a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained in the Blues warm-up match with the Chiefs on Friday.

Williams, who missed most of last season with the same injury, lasted only three minutes of the match. He faces surgery on Monday and a 12-month lay-off.

He is said to have known what the injury was as soon as it happened, and the doctors confirmed that the new rupture was very slightly below the old one.

In the game itself, the Blues outscored the Chiefs five tries to three in a 31-21 win, with full-back Paul Williams scoring a brace of tries and Rudi Wulf looking in fine form.

The Chiefs blew lukewarm at times, but the plethora of substitutions did not help their cause.
