ALL GOOD things come to those who wait and the final round of the 6 Nations was certainly something worth the wait after a dreary, stodgy middle section that was punctuated by penalties and a disturbing lack of tries. Like all the best nights out, though, we are now colouring in from memory the best bits of the Championship, trying to put names to faces and performances to the elite.

THE PARTY had to end some time. The fat lady is resting her shrill voice and the heroes of Cardiff’s street sweeping corps have earned their corn, but there is no more international rugby. Until the summer, that is. Let us live in the moment, though. Let us celebrate the madness and the maddening moments; the shrug-evoking cameos and the heady disharmony of delighted yelps and woeful whines.

BEING THE bridesmaid rather than the bride is never great and on Saturday there were few more radiant than the blushing Welsh belles, but for Scotland they will be happy they were on the dancefloor. The RBS 6 Nations spluttered along. After a glut of tries in week one everyone gorged on superlatives, stuffed with praise for the “greatest championship ever.”

“IS IT time to go back to the drawing board Declan?” The question posed after so many basic errors saw Ireland defeated by England. “No” was the simple answer given. He was right too. For Ireland the drawing board is no longer the issue, it’s the architect.

FRANCE WON their first Six Nations encounter since victory over Scotland on February 26 last year, a winless streak of seven matches that was still not enough to prevent them finishing bottom of the championship table for the first time since 1999.
