MELBOURNE IS regarded as the sporting capital of Australia, so it’s the perfect place to spend a week on next year’s British & Irish Lions Tour. The Lions will play two matches in the city next summer, facing Melbourne Rebels on Tuesday 25 June before doing battle with the Wallabies in the second Test of the series four days later.
So do you fancy becoming part of Lions coach Warren Gatland’s pride? Gullivers Sports Travel have official packages to suit every taste and budget, so you can roar on The Lions from the stands. There is also plenty to keep you entertained off the pitch, such as these five Melbourne attractions…
1. Sporting education
The Melbourne Cricket Ground – or MCG for short – is an iconic sporting venue. On non-event days there are daily tours of the MCG, which also houses the National Sports Museum. It’s a must-visit for any sports nut.
2. Hell for leather
Don’t fancy walking around the city? Well, you can see Melbourne’s sights from a different perspective by taking a tour of the city on a Harley Davidson motorbike. You get your own chauffeur and a huge adrenaline rush!
3. Life’s a beach
The wide, sandy beach of St Kilda is only a short tram ride from the city centre – and a great escape from the hustle and bustle. It’s a good place to relax – take a stroll along the seafront, enjoy a coffee on the pier or rummage in the local bookshops.
4. Wine and dine
A trip to the Yarra Valley region – less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne – should definitely be on the to-do list for wine lovers. Gullivers packages also include an exclusive Wine Day in Melbourne, where you get to taste some of the region’s finest wines and rub shoulders with other rugby fans and former internationals.
5. Happy feet
Experience the Australian wildlife by taking a two-hour drive to Phillip Island. The Penguin Parade at sunset is a particular favourite, with wild penguins emerging from the sea and heading to sand burrows.
Join Colin Charvis on tour
Former Wales back-rower Colin Charvis, who won 94 caps for his country, is part of the Gullivers Sports Travel team for next year’s British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia. Sign up for a tour package and you could chew the fat with a man who knows all about the Lions, having played in two Tests in Oz in 2001. Hear about Charvis’s memories of Melbourne by clicking here.
