NO TRIP to Australia would be complete without a visit to Sydney – and The British & Irish Lions stop there twice next summer. They play NSW Waratahs on 15 June before the Test series against the Wallabies climaxes on 6 July.
A Lions Tour Down Under gives you the chance to watch quality rugby while exploring Australia – and Gullivers Sports Travel have official packages to suit every taste and budget. Here are just a few of the attractions on offer in Sydney…
1. Bridge of highs
Feeling adventurous? Then climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the activity for you as you can take in the views from 134 metres up. The climbs take up to three-and-a-half hours, but it’s an incredible experience. It’s best to do it before the Test, though: you get breathalysed before going up!
2. Surf’s up!
For the sporty tourists, trying out surfing is a must and that means a trip to Bondi, which is only a short journey from Sydney city centre. If you’re not keen to get on a board, then try a boardwalk. The Bondi to Bronte Coastwalk, which takes about an hour and half, allows you to explore the beautiful coastline.
3. Cruise control
Sydney Harbour is an iconic image of Australia, so why not view it from water as well as land? Various companies organise cruises around the harbour. Or simply jump on the ferry to Manly – you can take classic snaps from the boat and then enjoy strolling around the popular seaside resort.
4. Harbour masters
Whether you want to while away the afternoon in an art gallery, put your brain to good use in a museum or simply get some tasty tucker, Darling Harbour is the place to be. Plus, they usually have a firework display on Saturday nights – the perfect place to toast a Lions’ series win. Here’s hoping!
5. Blasts from the past
Head to the North Sydney Oval on 4 July to see a host of ex-players pull on their boots for the final British & Irish Rugby Legends match against the Classic Wallabies. Admission is included on all Gullivers’ tours and Gullivers’ rugby ambassador Colin Charvis will be captain. What does 2001 tourist Charvis remember of the Lions’ time in Sydney?
