This game was the horror movie version of Groundhog Day for Wales, who put in their best performance of a hugely disappointing autumn series only to finish bereft after losing narrowly to Australia for a seventh time in 13 months. The game was no spectacle of running rugby – in truth it was more of a kicking duel – but no one could say the game was meaningless.

ENGLAND WENT into this Test against a supposedly dispirited Wallaby squad full of confidence. Sadly, when the whistle went, the roles had been reversed, with England, not so regal, in purple. In fact, they were a deep shade of claret after being outthought, outfought and most importantly outscored, as they went down 20-14. Both tries in the match were contentious.
