Newcastle Falcons can confirm that promising prop forward Darren Fearn has penned a new deal at Kingston Park.

The 22-year-old who hails from Scarborough, made his Aviva Premiership bow at Leicester Tigers last campaign, and following a string of impressive outings, head coach Alan Tait has retained his services.

In just his first season at the club, Fearn got his break in the Amlin Challenge Cup, making four appearances in the process coupled with his debut at a packed Welford Road.

Fearn began his rugby career at his local club in Scarborough before moving to the North-East to undertake a sports coaching diploma at Northumbria University.

Capped by England Students, Fearn said: “I am really pleased to have signed a new contract at the club and hopefully I can get a good run of games next season as I continue my rugby education in the North-East.

“There is a very professional set-up here with a lot of exciting things going to happen in the future. I am enjoying the lifestyle, facilities and the training that goes with been a professional rugby player. Ultimately I am pleased to have extended my contract at the club and I have to continue to improve my game.”

Having spent the 2008-09 season with Blaydon in a bid to get regular competitive rugby, Falcons boss Tait believes the robust prop is now ready for the step up.

Tait said: “Darren Fearn is a talented prop who has a good ball carry and will add further steel to our already strong pack. It is important to keep players like Darren [Darren Fearn] at the club as we look to move forward.”
