The Ospreys have signed 21-year old Australian born, Welsh qualified, fly-half, Pete Smith, on a short term contract.

Sydney born Smith, who is Welsh qualified through his father who hails from Wrexham, plays for Northern Suburbs in the Shute Shield, the senior competition in New South Wales, and has been offered the opportunity to carve a pro career having been identified as having the potential to become a fully fledged Osprey.

The youngster will arrive in Ospreylia later this month and will report for pre-season training with the region at Llandarcy Academy of Sport at the end of June.

Speaking about his opportunity, Smith said:

I cant wait to go there. Its a big opportunity for me, something that Ive worked towards all my life. Ive spoken to Scott Johnson and Im really looking forward to travelling to Wales later this month and giving it my best shot. Hopefully, I can impress the coaches enough to be able to stay there for longer.

Ospreys Chief Operations Officer, Andrew Hore, added:

Pete comes to us highly recommended, with an outstanding record in Sydney club football. The feedback weve had about him suggests he has all the attributes we want from a ten, he takes the ball to the line and offloads well. Hes got a real opportunity to make an impression with the Ospreys, and if all goes well then he has a chance to earn himself a long term contract.
