Watch official World Cup highlights of Australia's controversial victory over Scotland

Scotland went out of the World Cup in heartbreaking fashion, as they led 34-32 with 90 seconds to go but a late controversial Bernard Foley penalty sent the Wallabies into the semis.

In a fascinating eight-try match Mark Bennett’s interception try with seven minutes to go seemed to have sealed one of the great World Cup upsets.

However with a minute to go referee Craig Joubert called a deliberate offside when replays seemed to indicate the ball had come off a Wallaby player. World Rugby regulations states to only permit the TMO to rule on foul play, or whether tries or kicks at goal are legitimate.

Bernard Foley duly kicked for the three points to steal the game away. Joubert ran for the tunnel to a chorus of boos, leaving Scotland’s players and fans devastated by the cruel finale.

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter says the penalty that saw his side perish to a 35-34 World Cup quarter-final defeat should have been referred to the television match official – Watch official World Cup highlights here.
