Watch official World Cup highlights of New Zealand's World Cup win over Australia

A spirited Australia fightback was not enough for the Wallabies as New Zealand held their nerve to triumph and win a record third World Cup and become the first team to post successive back-to-back World Cup wins.

Beautifully executed tries from Nehe Milner-Skudder and the irrepressible Ma’a Nonu had given the All Blacks a 21-3 lead early in the second half – and it seemed that New Zealand were heading for a landslide victory, however Australia had other ideas. David Pocock and Tevita Kuridrani struck back, taking advantage of New Zealand’s one man deficit.

However, newly crowned World Player of the Year Dan Carter, swung the pendulum back in the All Blacks’ favour – with a sumptuous long-distance drop-goal with fifteen minutes to go and only four points the difference between both teams.

A Carter penalty helped to regain control, and Beauden Barrett sprinted away on to Ben Smith’s clearing kick to make New Zealand the most successful team in World Cup history – Watch official World Cup highlights here.
