A former Kelvinside student, Scotland lock Richie Gray rose through the Scotland age-grade teams to skipper the U20s in 2009. He was signed by Glasgow Warriors in 2009, giving impressive performances in the PRO12 and European Cup.

June 2012 saw a move to Sale Sharks after interest from a number of English clubs. The move was short-lived and at the end of the season the second-row moved to French side Castres.

Gray’s first three international appearances were as replacement during the 2010 Six Nations but when the autumn Internationals rolled around he was ready to play a bigger role, starting in the loss against New Zealand and wins against South Africa and Samoa.

In the 2011 Six Nations, Gray started in four of the games, including the 21-8 victory over Italy. Scotland head coach Andy Robinson rewarded Gray’s performances with a spot in the 2011 World Cup squad. At the age of 22, he played all four of Scotland’s games.

Since then, he has featured in every Six Nations Championship effort for Scotland. His 2015 Six Nations tournament was cut short by an upper arm injury against Wales but he has returned to form in time for the 2015 World Cup.

He made one appearance for the British & Irish Lions in 2013, coming off the bench in the victorious final Test in Sydney.
