England ruined Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day party by inflicting a 30-9 thrashing of their guests at a rain-soaked Twickenham. In a scrappy encounter in which there were numerous handling errors, England’s scrum was completely dominant over Ireland’s, and penalties resulting from it, plus a penalty try, won them the game, and saw them finish the championship in second place.

A first win for the Lancaster regime took plenty of blood and guts but was far from the convincing performance many would have hoped for. In all honesty, England’s performance was a realistic reflection of their current state: a new team learning new combinations, which despite a considerable amount of goodwill and hard work will not gel instantly.

In 2010′s Summer Internationals, England made Sydney their temporary home in June to play Australia. In a game that showed Englands true capabilities, the spotlight fell on a young Leicester Tiger – Ben Youngs, who takes advantage of an overlap to not only stun the Australians but the cameraman heading in the wrong direction.
