Australia v British & Irish Lions third Test preview

Six weeks after the 2025 edition of the British & Irish Lions played their first match against Argentina, their tour comes to a close at the Accor Stadium in Sydney. Since that opening defeat in Dublin, they’ve won every game on Australian soil, beating Super Rugby and invitational sides in their six warm-up matches, and attaining an unassailable 2-0  lead in their Test series against the Wallabies.

That 2-0 doesn’t tell the full story, however. While the Lions were dominant on their way to winning the first Test 27-19 (especially before half-time), Joe Schmidt’s men in gold and green were a side reborn a week later. They cruised to a 23-5 lead at the MCG, but were denied in the last minute when a Hugo Keenan try wrapped up a stirring comeback for the Lions, the tourists clinching a tight 29-26 victory. Even then there was some controversy, as the Wallabies claimed Jac Morgan (the sole Welsh representative in the British & Irish Lions squad) had performed an illegal clearout.

The final matchday 23 selected by Andy Farrell and his British & Irish Lions coaching staff suggests they’re not going to be satisfied with anything but a 3-0 whitewash. Indeed, rather than handing out Test caps to squad members yet to face the Wallabies, their selection keeps faith with most of the players from the first two Tests.

There are just two changes to the starting XV from Melbourne, where Blair Kinghorn (who impressed off the bench last weekend) takes James Lowe ’s place on the wing, and James Ryan comes in for Ollie Chessum in the second row. Lowe drops out of the 23, with Chessum swapping places with Ryan on the bench. Garry Ringrose is still ruled out by concussion, so Huw Jones continues at outside centre. As the coaches opt for a 6-2 split among the replacements, Ben Earl returns to the matchday squad – his ability to fill in at centre presumably factored into Farrell’s decision-making. (Tommy Freeman was an injury worry on Friday but it now looks like he’s been passed fit to play.)

The Wallabies, meanwhile, have brought veteran scrum-half Nic White back into the side for his final international match. Jake Gordon drops out of the 23 to make way. Elsewhere, injuries mean that wing Dylan Pietsch, prop Taniela Tupou and flanker Tom Hooper come into the side for Harry Potter, Allan Alaalatoa and Rob Valetini, respectively. Late training injuries have also led to a minor crisis at hooker, with original selection David Porecki and back-up Matt Faessler both ruled out on Friday. Substitute Billy Pollard steps up to the starting XV, with Brandon Paenga-Amosa (who’s already played the Lions three times this tour) called up for the bench.

Schmidt has switched back to a 5-3 split among his substitutes, with Zane Nonggorr and Andrew Kellaway drafted into the matchday squad.
